single eye, ember

Behind the yellow doorframe’s glow,
where shadows settle, thick and low,
one eye stays open, steady, wide,
a coal still burning there inside.

It doesn’t blink, it doesn’t sleep,
it keeps the watch the dark can’t keep,
a sliver of moon across its stare,
an ember saying someone’s there.
